What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a time-tested healing practice that’s been used for over 2,500 years — and it’s backed by science for treating more than 300 health conditions.

By gently inserting hair-thin needles at key points on the body, acupuncture stimulates your body’s internal messenger system to trigger powerful healing responses. It can help regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve digestion, support better sleep, and ease stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s also a natural beauty booster — known to smooth wrinkles, calm inflammation, and stimulate collagen production for glowing, healthy skin.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

One of the most common concerns for first-time acupuncture patients is whether the treatment is painful. The short answer: Acupuncture is designed to help ease discomfort, not cause it. Highly trained practitioners aim for your mental and physical comfort during treatment – however some minor sensations may still occur.

What Acupuncture Feels Like

Acupuncture uses hair-thin, stainless steel needles that are much smaller than medical needles. Most people experience little to no pain during insertion. Some report a mild sensation such as:

  • A Dull Ache at the acupuncture point
  • A Warming or tingling sensation
  • Heaviness or slight throbbing
  • Occasional tightness or twitching

These sensations are normal and signal that the treatment is working. Many patients find acupuncture so relaxing that they end up taking the best nap of their lives during the session.

Some Spots Are More Sensitive Than Others

Certain pressure points – especially those near the hands, feet, or areas with less skin and muscle – may feel more sensitive. If a needle ever feels uncomfortable, we highly encourage you to speak up immediately. Your acupuncturist can adjust the placement in real-time for your comfort.

Acupuncture Safety

Relatively few complications from using acupuncture have been reported. Typically, acupuncture complications are the result of nonsterile needles and improper treatment delivery. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates acupuncture needles as medical devices for use by licensed practitioners. As such, the needles must be manufactured and labeled according to strict standards. They are required to be sterile, nontoxic, and labeled for single use by qualified practitioners only.

When you choose a clean and welcoming studio like ours, you don’t have anything to worry about. Our Licensed Acupuncturists all hold a three-year Master’s degree and are licensed to practice in New York, and many have completed additional study to become a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

Possible Soreness After Treatment

Acupuncture is a gentle, non-invasive treatment, but in extremely rare instances, some people may experience temporary soreness, mild bruising, or lightheadedness. These effects, should they occur, are short-lived, similar to how your body might feel after a deep massage.

Acupuncture is an effective, scientifically-backed method for relieving pain, reducing stress, and promoting relaxation. If you're hesitant about needles, know that acupuncture is designed to restore balance without discomfort. Still unsure? The best way to experience it is to try it for yourself! You may just float out of your appointment feeling lighter, calmer, and more connected to your body.

How Does Ear Seeding Complement Acupuncture?

Ear seeding is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that enhances acupuncture by stimulating key acupressure points on the ear. Traditionally made from Vaccaria plant seeds, ear seeds help support stress relief, focus, and better sleep – all without the use of needles. While this remains true, the seeds we use in-studio are crafted from 24k gold, believed to further enhance the healing activation of the points. Benefits of ear seeding include:

  • Easing Stress And Anxiety: May stimulate relaxation points to promote a sense of calm.*
  • Appetite And Digestion Support: Targets metabolism and gut health.*
  • Improved Sleep And Focus: May help you achieve deep rest and mental clarity.*
  • Easing Pain And Tension: May help with headaches, chronic pain, and inflammation.*

Ear seeding can be done in-studio (as an add-on) or at home with WTHN’s Ear Seed Kits, making it easy to experience the benefits anytime.

How Does Cupping Contribute To Acupuncture Treatments?

Cupping is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, working alongside acupuncture to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and accelerate the body’s natural healing process. Creating gentle suction, cupping loosens tight muscles, reduces stress, and supports immune function — making it an excellent complement to acupuncture. Here are the key benefits:

  • Muscle Tension And Pain Relief: Eases tightness and promotes faster recovery.*
  • Stress Reduction: Encourages deep relaxation and relieves physical stress.*
  • Detoxification And Circulation: Enhances blood flow and supports the lymphatic system.*
  • Immune And Respiratory Support: This may aid in relieving colds, congestion, and allergies.*

Cupping therapy is available in-studio or as a self-care practice at home with our Cupping Kits, making it an accessible tool for ongoing wellness.

FAQ

Find the most frequently asked questions below.
  • Acupuncture is an ancient system of complementary medicine that’s worked to keep people healthy for over 2,500 years. Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-thin needles at key points on the body. These needles interact with the fascial network (our internal messenger system) to alter brain chemistry and stimulate internal responses, such as regulating hormones like cortisol, releasing pain-relieving endorphins, increasing circulation, reducing inflammation and more. Primary acupuncture benefits include managing pain, digestion, sleep and hormone-related health--as well as mental health issues like stress, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture not only has the potential to help you feel better, but it can also help you look better. It’s an ancient Chinese beauty secret known to reduce wrinkles and inflammation while boosting collagen and elastin.

  • TCM naturally heals humans using three keys: acupuncture, herbal remedies and cupping therapy. Though commonly used together as a powerful holistic approach, each can be just as dynamic on their own. TCM believes the processes of the human body are interrelated and connected to the surrounding environment. And so, it treats the underlying root of health issues rather than the symptoms on the surface--all while strengthening the body’s internal defenses and enhancing its ability to sustain optimal health.

  • Acupuncture for anxiety. Acupuncture for migraines. Acupuncture for depression. Acupuncture for lower back pain. Acupuncture for fertility. The list goes on and on--with over 300 use cases in total, according to the World Health Organization. At WTHN, we break it down to three major categories: Prevent, Heal + Glow:

    ○ PREVENT // Let’s start by busting a myth. You don’t need to be sick or injured to see some serious benefits from acupuncture. In fact, regular maintenance is a powerful way of keeping you healthy. If you’re busy and always on the go with zero time to get sick, acupuncture is a great way to ward off fatigue, soothe sore muscles, minimize stress and anxiety and majorly boost immunity.

    ○ HEAL // Acupuncture has healed for millennia, and been clinically proven to treat hundreds of medical conditions. Major areas that can be healed by acupuncture: pain (literally from head to toe, but more commonly neck, back + shoulder pain plus migraines), women’s health (PMS, fertility + menopause), digestion, insomnia and men’s health (sex drive + erectile dysfunction).

    ○ GLOW // You want to feel your best, why not look your best while you’re at it? Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is an ancient Chinese beauty secret that reduces inflammation, lifts sagging facial muscles and boosts collagen to reduce wrinkles and fine lines--and gives your skin an overall fresh-faced radiance from WTHN. Go on, give it a glow!

The science behind acupuncture

Research has shown the efficacy of acupuncture vs. a placebo for decades, now emerging medical imaging/technology is helping us see the effects of acupuncture as a treatment is occurring and thus better understand the physiological pathways affected.

Acupuncture is known to work in four key ways:

  • Direct response releasing tight muscles and trigger points
  • Stimulating the central nervous system, creating biochemical changes
  • Increasing circulation + reducing inflammation throughout the body
  • Restoring normal brain functioning via homeostatic effects

Acupuncture points are a meeting place of blood, nerve, lymph and an access point to the body’s messenger system of connective tissue.

It works via the fascia to send messages to stimulate the brain. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. For example, hormones such as dopamine and serotonin or endorphins and enkephalins. These biochemical changes stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.
