How to revitalize your energy this summer
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is the season of the Heart — a time to connect, move outward, and embrace your most radiant self.
It’s also a season where too much heat (literal or emotional) can throw us off balance. Cooling foods, calming rituals, and gentle movement can help keep your energy flowing and your spirit grounded.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is characterized by the Fire element, representing outward energy, expansion, and activity
The Heart is considered the “Emperor” of the body — governing blood circulation and housing the Shen (your spirit and consciousness)
Its paired organ, the Small Intestine, helps filter and sort what we take in — both physically and emotionally
Balance this fiery energy by staying cool, calm, and open-hearted
1. Eat for Energy + Balance
- Focus on cooling foods like cucumbers, watermelon, mint, leafy greens
- Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy dishes that add internal heat
- Eat light and seasonal — favor steaming, blanching, and raw dishes
- Sip on cooling herbal teas like chrysanthemum, hibiscus, or peppermint
2. Nourish the Heart + Spirit
- Surround yourself with joy, laughter, and connection — the emotions of summer
- Practice meditation or journaling to keep your Shen clear and grounded
- Prioritize rest and emotional regulation, especially if you feel overstimulated or scattered
- Use calming rituals to protect your inner peace while embracing outward energy
3. Tap into Acupressure
- GB21 (Jianjing): located on the highest point of the shoulder. Releases emotional tension stored in the body
- HT7 (Shenmen / Spirit Gate): located at the wrist crease (pinky side). Calms anxiety, supports sleep, eases restlessness
- PC6 (Neiguan / Inner Gate): located 3 finger-widths below the wrist. Eases stress, balances emotions, helps with nausea
4. Move + Thrive
- Embrace nature: take your movement outdoors
- Prioritize gentle, consistent activity — walking, swimming, qigong, yoga
- Avoid overexertion in the peak heat of the day
- Stretch and breathe deeply to circulate Qi and cool internal fire
