What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a time-tested healing practice that’s been used for over 2,500 years — and it’s backed by science for treating more than 300 health conditions.

By gently inserting hair-thin needles at key points on the body, acupuncture stimulates your body’s internal messenger system to trigger powerful healing responses. It can help regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve digestion, support better sleep, and ease stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s also a natural beauty booster — known to smooth wrinkles, calm inflammation, and stimulate collagen production for glowing, healthy skin.

Acupuncture For Whole-Body Wellness

While fertility support is a key benefit of acupuncture, it’s far from the only thing it can help with. At WTHN, we treat various conditions using targeted, modernized acupuncture techniques. Here’s how acupuncture offers a minimally invasive way to feel your best:

  • Chronic Pain & Muscle Recovery: Acupuncture stimulates circulation, reduces inflammation, and helps release muscle tension, making it effective for conditions like sciatica, tendonitis, muscle knots, and potentially back or neck pain.
  • Stress, Anxiety & Depression: Regulating the nervous system and promoting relaxation are two potential benefits through which acupuncture may help melt away tension so you feel more balanced.
  • Insomnia & Sleep Support: Acupuncture may also help regulate melatonin production, making it an excellent solution for those who struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep.
  • Digestive Health: Acupuncture helps regulate gut function, reducing bloating, nausea, IBS, constipation, and acid reflux by promoting proper digestion and gut motility.
  • Headaches & Migraines: Acupuncture may potentially help ease chronic headaches, migraines, and TMJ pain by improving circulation and reducing inflammation.
  • Seasonal Allergies & Immune Support: Regular acupuncture sessions help strengthen the immune system and ease symptoms of allergies, sinus congestion, and respiratory issues.
  • Skin Health & Anti-Aging: Acupuncture may stimulate collagen production and enhance circulation to reduce fine lines, improve skin texture, and achieve a radiant glow from within.

At WTHN, our Licensed Acupuncturists (LAc) take a personalized approach to treating each of these concerns, creating customized care plans designed to support your long-term wellness goals. Whether you’re seeking a way to help ease pain, better sleep, or a stronger immune system, acupuncture is a powerful tool to improve your quality of life. With three convenient locations in Flatiron, Williamsburg, and the Upper West Side, we make it easy for busy New Yorkers like you to prioritize their health.

How Does Fertility Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a time-tested, centuries-old practice that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms by inserting fine, sterile needles into specific points along energy pathways. Also called meridian lines, these pathways regulate vital energy or Qi. When it comes to fertility, acupuncture works by optimizing reproductive function, regulating hormones, and reducing stress – key factors that contribute to successful conception. Here’s how acupuncture can support your reproductive health.

Regulating Hormones For Optimal Fertility

Regular menstrual cycles are essential for a successful pregnancy. Hormonal imbalances can disrupt ovulation, menstrual cycles, and reproductive function. Studies show that consistent acupuncture treatments regulate hormone levels and enhance ovarian function. Acupuncture can even improve the frequency of ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome, according to a 2013 study in the American Journal of Physiology.

Improving Blood Flow To The Uterus And Ovaries

Acupuncture enhances blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, which increases oxygen and nutrient delivery to reproductive organs and improves endometrial lining thickness, creating a more favorable environment for implantation and embryo development, which is crucial for a healthy pregnancy. Our insights align with research showing that cutaneous stimulation – particularly of the hindpaw and perineal areas – boosts uterine blood flow in anesthetized rats via somatic group II, III, and IV afferent nerves and pelvic parasympathetic cholinergic pathways. This somatic-autonomic reflex, detailed in a study published in the journal Evidence-based Complementary And Alternative Medicine, highlights how acupuncture-like stimuli trigger vasodilation, supporting reproductive health through targeted neural activation.

Reducing Stress And Cortisol Levels

Chronic stress can negatively impact fertility by elevating cortisol levels, which may disrupt reproductive hormones and interfere with ovulation. Acupuncture has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the physiological effects of stress. Additionally, a systemic review of six studies suggests that there is high-level evidence to support the use of acupuncture for treating depression during pregnancy (Medical Acupuncture, June 2013). By calming the body and mind, acupuncture creates an optimal state for conception and can increase feelings of well-being and ameliorate any negative side effects of stress.

Supporting IVF And Assisted Reproductive Treatments

Many individuals undergoing IVF, IUI, or other assisted reproductive technologies (ART) turn to fertility acupuncture as a complementary therapy. Receiving acupuncture before and after embryo transfer may help increase the likelihood of implantation and a successful pregnancy. Research demonstrates that acupuncture increases the success rate of IVF by 50 percent vs. a lack of acupuncture, according to a study in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Acupuncture and Immune Regulation: Supporting Early Pregnancy

Acupuncture’s influence on immune system regulation is a multifaceted topic we believe merits thorough exploration, particularly for its potential in early pregnancy beyond IVF contexts. A balanced immune response is vital – overactivity might lead us to reject an embryo as foreign, while underactivity could compromise protection. According to a study from the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, acupuncture stimulates somatic nerves, triggering autonomic reflexes that may indirectly modulate immune responses through neural pathways. A study from the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences shows how implantation relies on cytokine balance – wherein pro-inflammatory IL-6 must be tempered by anti-inflammatory IL-10, a shift acupuncture may support by reducing inflammation.

A study from Fertility and Sterility suggests acupuncture also regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, linking hormonal stability to immune function, which could prevent our bodies from attacking a developing embryo. This nuanced interplay ties directly to inflammation management, making it a critical area for us to understand and apply effectively.

Balancing The Menstrual Cycle And Ovulation

Acupuncture may potentially support fertility in women having difficulty conceiving while helping with a range of gynecological conditions (International Journal of Women’s Health, March 2014). Restoring hormonal balance and a predictable menstrual cycle is how acupuncture may help regulate ovulation, making it easier to conceive naturally or in conjunction with fertility treatments.

Lowering Inflammation

Inflammation can negatively affect fertility in both men and women. It can disrupt ovulation, implantation, and sperm quality. Inflammation can also increase the risk of miscarriage and is higher in conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and PCOS. Acupuncture has immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory effects that help reduce internal strain on the reproductive system and create a healthier environment for conception.

Contributing To Overall Women’s Health

For women who are past reproductive age or not looking to become pregnant, acupuncture still may provide plenty of general potential benefits for women’s health. A regular menstrual cycle is important because it indicates balanced hormone levels, signifying that your body is functioning normally. Irregular periods can be a symptom of underlying health issues like thyroid problems, affecting your overall well-being.

A typical session involves inserting hair-thin needles into carefully chosen points, such as Stomach 29 (to stimulate blood flow to the ovaries) and Spleen 6 (to regulate menstrual cycles). Most clients describe the treatment as relaxing – many take the best nap.

Can I Get Acupuncture If I Am Pregnant Or Breastfeeding?

Acupuncture is not only safe during pregnancy – it’s highly recommended. At WTHN, we encourage mamas and mamas-to-be to integrate acupuncture into their routines. It’s the perfect little escape that supports a healthy pregnancy. We may help with:

  • Morning Sickness & Nausea: Acupuncture may help calm the digestive system and regulate hormones, reducing queasiness and making early pregnancy more comfortable.
  • Lower Back Pain: Increasing circulation and relaxing tense muscles is how acupuncture may help ease pain in the lower back.
  • Anxiety, Insomnia & Pre-Baby Jitters: Acupuncture may help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, easing stress, promoting relaxation, and improving sleep quality during pregnancy.
  • Postpartum Care: After birth, acupuncture continues to be a valuable tool for postpartum recovery. It’s great for exhaustion, depression, hormone regulation, and energy restoration.

Safety Precautions At WTHN

To ensure the highest safety standards, all acupuncture treatments at WTHN utilize sterile, non-toxic needles that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves. These needles are classified as medical devices and must meet strict federal regulations to be considered suitable for patient use. They are disposable, clean, and designed for one-time use, eliminating cross-contamination risk. Unlike traditional hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are hair-thin, flexible, and designed to minimize discomfort while stimulating the body’s natural healing response.

Why It’s Important To Seek Help From Professionals

Relatively few complications from using acupuncture have been reported. However, it’s important to remember that only a professional should administer acupuncture. Improper delivery can result in complications such as infections, punctured organs, collapsed lungs, and injury to the central nervous system (National Institute of Health, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health). With an unlicensed acupuncturist, you also run the risk of using nonsterile needles.

Whether you’re coming in for fertility support, easing stress, or pain management, you can trust that dedicated practitioners perform your treatment at WTHN in a clean and deeply restorative environment.

FAQ

Find the most frequently asked questions below.
  • Acupuncture is an ancient system of complementary medicine that’s worked to keep people healthy for over 2,500 years. Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-thin needles at key points on the body. These needles interact with the fascial network (our internal messenger system) to alter brain chemistry and stimulate internal responses, such as regulating hormones like cortisol, releasing pain-relieving endorphins, increasing circulation, reducing inflammation and more. Primary acupuncture benefits include managing pain, digestion, sleep and hormone-related health--as well as mental health issues like stress, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture not only has the potential to help you feel better, but it can also help you look better. It’s an ancient Chinese beauty secret known to reduce wrinkles and inflammation while boosting collagen and elastin.

  • TCM naturally heals humans using three keys: acupuncture, herbal remedies and cupping therapy. Though commonly used together as a powerful holistic approach, each can be just as dynamic on their own. TCM believes the processes of the human body are interrelated and connected to the surrounding environment. And so, it treats the underlying root of health issues rather than the symptoms on the surface--all while strengthening the body’s internal defenses and enhancing its ability to sustain optimal health.

  • Acupuncture for anxiety. Acupuncture for migraines. Acupuncture for depression. Acupuncture for lower back pain. Acupuncture for fertility. The list goes on and on--with over 300 use cases in total, according to the World Health Organization. At WTHN, we break it down to three major categories: Prevent, Heal + Glow:

    ○ PREVENT // Let’s start by busting a myth. You don’t need to be sick or injured to see some serious benefits from acupuncture. In fact, regular maintenance is a powerful way of keeping you healthy. If you’re busy and always on the go with zero time to get sick, acupuncture is a great way to ward off fatigue, soothe sore muscles, minimize stress and anxiety and majorly boost immunity.

    ○ HEAL // Acupuncture has healed for millennia, and been clinically proven to treat hundreds of medical conditions. Major areas that can be healed by acupuncture: pain (literally from head to toe, but more commonly neck, back + shoulder pain plus migraines), women’s health (PMS, fertility + menopause), digestion, insomnia and men’s health (sex drive + erectile dysfunction).

    ○ GLOW // You want to feel your best, why not look your best while you’re at it? Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is an ancient Chinese beauty secret that reduces inflammation, lifts sagging facial muscles and boosts collagen to reduce wrinkles and fine lines--and gives your skin an overall fresh-faced radiance from WTHN. Go on, give it a glow!

The science behind acupuncture

Research has shown the efficacy of acupuncture vs. a placebo for decades, now emerging medical imaging/technology is helping us see the effects of acupuncture as a treatment is occurring and thus better understand the physiological pathways affected.

Acupuncture is known to work in four key ways:

  • Direct response releasing tight muscles and trigger points
  • Stimulating the central nervous system, creating biochemical changes
  • Increasing circulation + reducing inflammation throughout the body
  • Restoring normal brain functioning via homeostatic effects

Acupuncture points are a meeting place of blood, nerve, lymph and an access point to the body’s messenger system of connective tissue.

It works via the fascia to send messages to stimulate the brain. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. For example, hormones such as dopamine and serotonin or endorphins and enkephalins. These biochemical changes stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.
