What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a time-tested healing practice that’s been used for over 2,500 years — and it’s backed by science for treating more than 300 health conditions.

By gently inserting hair-thin needles at key points on the body, acupuncture stimulates your body’s internal messenger system to trigger powerful healing responses. It can help regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve digestion, support better sleep, and ease stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s also a natural beauty booster — known to smooth wrinkles, calm inflammation, and stimulate collagen production for glowing, healthy skin.

Where Are The Best Acupuncture Services In Brooklyn NYC?

The healing benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine are closer than you think. WTHN offers a peaceful getaway for relaxation and holistic healing in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We bring acupuncture, cupping, and therapeutic products to the neighborhood in an accessible way. Whether you’re looking for ways to help ease stress, potentially reduce pain, or improve digestion, our skilled Licensed Acupuncturists (LAc) provide personalized treatments designed to restore balance and optimize well-being.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body using hair-thin, sterile needles to optimize your body's capacity for self-repair and healing. At WTHN, our sessions generally last 45 minutes. If you’re a new client, you’ll undergo a 15-minute initial consultation with your acupuncturist so the entire appointment will take about an hour.

How Acupuncture Feels

Acupuncture is designed to be relaxing and therapeutic — not painful. Most people barely feel anything or describe a mild tingling or warmth as the needle goes in. Occasionally, areas closer to the hands, feet, or joints may be more sensitive, but discomfort is minimal and short-lived. If a point feels too intense, please let your acupuncturist know immediately! They can adjust the placement or stimulation in real-time to keep you comfortable.

Conditions We Treat

At WTHN, we make it easier than ever to invest in your health by specializing in a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Stress, Anxiety, And Depression: Acupuncture can help these conditions by regulating hormones and the nervous system for the long term – encouraging relaxation and supporting emotional balance for more immediate relief.
  • Pain Management: Provides targeted relief to reduce pain and inflammation, boost circulation, and speeds up healing.
  • Tight And Sore Muscles: Aids in muscle recovery by relaxing tight, overused muscles and encouraging repair.
  • Better Sleep: Helps with insomnia by regulating hormones for a better circadian rhythm and sleep cycle.
  • Anti-Aging And Acne: Regulates hormones and improves blood circulation for natural skin rejuvenation and acne prevention.
  • Women’s Health: Enhances reproductive health, increases IVF success rates, and supports conception with specialized Fertility Support Packages curated by Dr. Nicole Glathe.

Acupuncture is a potent alternative to traditional methods of easing pain. Because we target specific points, we work to assist your body in healing itself effectively and naturally.* Like our other two studios in Flatiron and the Upper West Side, our Williamsburg location provides a welcoming, stress-free atmosphere where our professional Healers can help you find harmony.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

At WTHN, we combine ancient wisdom with modern safety standards, ensuring that every treatment is effective and risk-free. When performed by trained professionals, acupuncture is a completely safe and minimally invasive treatment. We give you peace of mind by adhering to the highest professional standards, ensuring a comfortable and worry-free experience.

All of our acupuncturists are licensed to practice acupuncture in the state of New York, have all completed national board exams, and have a minimum of a Master's level of education on acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

FDA-Approved Needles

One of the most common concerns about acupuncture is the use of needles. Rest assured, acupuncture needles are nothing like the large hypodermic needles used for injections. They are super thin, sterile, and designed for single use only.

  • Regulated By The FDA: Acupuncture needles are classified as medical devices and must meet strict safety standards.
  • Non-Toxic: Every needle used at WTHN is sterile, disposable, and never reused, eliminating any risk of harmful cross-contamination.

Highly Trained Licensed Acupuncturists

At WTHN, your treatment is in the hands of some of NYC's best acupuncturists. Every one of our Healers has the following credentials:

  • Minimum Three-Year Master’s Degree In Acupuncture: They undergo rigorous scientific coursework and clinical practicum.
  • State License: Every member of our acupuncture team is cleared to practice in the state of New York and is licensed.
  • Doctor Of Acupuncture And Chinese Medicine (DACM): Some of our talented acupuncturists have completed additional studies to become a DCAM.

Are There Any Side Effects To Acupuncture?

For most, acupuncture is a well-tolerated treatment with very few risks. Temporary side effects may include:

  • Slight Soreness Or Bleeding may occur at the needle insertion points, but the effects (like minor bruising) usually fade quickly.
  • Mild Fatigue Or Lightheadedness is a positive sign that the treatment is working! Your body should feel deeply relaxed after the session.
  • Temporary Changes: As your body adjusts to the treatment, you may notice shifts in your digestion or sleep patterns.

How To Maximize Your Results After Acupuncture

Acupuncture restores balance and promotes healing, but what you do after your session can enhance and extend its benefits.

What To Expect After Acupuncture

The effects of acupuncture vary based on your body and treatment goals. Many clients experience an immediate sense of relaxation and calm — something we like to call an "Acu-high." Other common post-session effects include:

  • Potentially Easing Pain Or Tension: Easing pain in targeted areas may immediately be noticeable or develop over the next 24 to 48 hours.
  • Better Sleep: Many clients report more profound, more restful sleep following acupuncture.
  • Digestive Changes: Some experience improved digestion, while others may need an adjustment period.
  • Mild Fatigue Or Lightheadedness: This is normal, as your body adjusts to new, improved energy flow.

Post-Session Tips To Maximize Your Acupuncture Benefits

The following post-care tips can help you feel better for longer:

  1. Hydrate And Nourish Your Body: Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins and support circulation. Choose whole, nutrient-dense foods rich in antioxidants to complement your body’s healing process. Try to avoid processed foods, excessive caffeine, and alcohol immediately after your session.
  2. Take It Easy On Exercise: While gentle movement like walking or yoga is encouraged, avoid strenuous exercise for a few hours – especially if your session is focused on reducing stress, anxiety, or muscle tension. If you prefer an intense workout, schedule it before your acupuncture appointment.
  3. Prioritize Rest And Relaxation: Acupuncture promotes deep healing, so listen to your body. If you feel sleepy, nap or get to bed early for a whole night of rest. Avoid overstimulation from screens, loud music, or stressful environments.
  4. Incorporate TCM Into Your Routine: Traditional Chinese Medicine extends beyond acupuncture. Small daily habits can keep the benefits going between sessions. For instance, you could use at-home tools like WTHN’s Acupressure Mat Set, ear seeds, or cupping kits to maintain balance.
  5. Be Consistent With Your Treatment Plan: Acupuncture works best when done consistently. Many conditions respond well to weekly sessions, then transition to monthly maintenance treatments. Your Licensed Acupuncturist will recommend a plan based on your goals. Remember, a membership can make ongoing treatment much more budget-friendly.
  6. Plan Ahead For Self-Care: Book your next session to stay on track with your healing. If you’re starting a new self-care habit, research shows it takes about three weeks to form a routine — so be patient and keep going!

Following these simple post-care practices will help you potentially extend the benefits of acupuncture and make holistic healing a seamless part of your lifestyle. Ready for your next session? Book today and continue your journey toward balance, energy, and well-being.

FAQ

Find the most frequently asked questions below.
  • Acupuncture is an ancient system of complementary medicine that’s worked to keep people healthy for over 2,500 years. Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of hair-thin needles at key points on the body. These needles interact with the fascial network (our internal messenger system) to alter brain chemistry and stimulate internal responses, such as regulating hormones like cortisol, releasing pain-relieving endorphins, increasing circulation, reducing inflammation and more. Primary acupuncture benefits include managing pain, digestion, sleep and hormone-related health--as well as mental health issues like stress, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture not only has the potential to help you feel better, but it can also help you look better. It’s an ancient Chinese beauty secret known to reduce wrinkles and inflammation while boosting collagen and elastin.

  • TCM naturally heals humans using three keys: acupuncture, herbal remedies and cupping therapy. Though commonly used together as a powerful holistic approach, each can be just as dynamic on their own. TCM believes the processes of the human body are interrelated and connected to the surrounding environment. And so, it treats the underlying root of health issues rather than the symptoms on the surface--all while strengthening the body’s internal defenses and enhancing its ability to sustain optimal health.

  • Acupuncture for anxiety. Acupuncture for migraines. Acupuncture for depression. Acupuncture for lower back pain. Acupuncture for fertility. The list goes on and on--with over 300 use cases in total, according to the World Health Organization. At WTHN, we break it down to three major categories: Prevent, Heal + Glow:

    ○ PREVENT // Let’s start by busting a myth. You don’t need to be sick or injured to see some serious benefits from acupuncture. In fact, regular maintenance is a powerful way of keeping you healthy. If you’re busy and always on the go with zero time to get sick, acupuncture is a great way to ward off fatigue, soothe sore muscles, minimize stress and anxiety and majorly boost immunity.

    ○ HEAL // Acupuncture has healed for millennia, and been clinically proven to treat hundreds of medical conditions. Major areas that can be healed by acupuncture: pain (literally from head to toe, but more commonly neck, back + shoulder pain plus migraines), women’s health (PMS, fertility + menopause), digestion, insomnia and men’s health (sex drive + erectile dysfunction).

    ○ GLOW // You want to feel your best, why not look your best while you’re at it? Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is an ancient Chinese beauty secret that reduces inflammation, lifts sagging facial muscles and boosts collagen to reduce wrinkles and fine lines--and gives your skin an overall fresh-faced radiance from WTHN. Go on, give it a glow!

  • Relatively few complications from using acupuncture have been reported. Complications can result from use of nonsterile needles and improper delivery of treatments. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates acupuncture needles as medical devices for use by licensed practitioners and requires that needles be manufactured and labeled according to certain standards. For example, the FDA requires that needles be sterile, nontoxic, and labeled for single use by qualified practitioners only. When not delivered properly, acupuncture can cause serious adverse effects, including infections, punctured organs, collapsed lungs, and injury to the central nervous system (National Institute of Health, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

  • Acupuncturists have a minimum of a three-year Master’s degree with rigorous scientific coursework and clinical practicum. To practice acupuncture, acupuncturists must be licensed by the state in which they work. All of our Healers are Licensed Acupuncturists (LAC), and some have completed additional study to be a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACM). In addition, our Healers actively participate in a rigorous, proprietary training program designed and delivered by WTHN Co-founder + Chief Healing Officer Dr. Shari Auth.

The science behind acupuncture

Research has shown the efficacy of acupuncture vs. a placebo for decades, now emerging medical imaging/technology is helping us see the effects of acupuncture as a treatment is occurring and thus better understand the physiological pathways affected.

Acupuncture is known to work in four key ways:

  • Direct response releasing tight muscles and trigger points
  • Stimulating the central nervous system, creating biochemical changes
  • Increasing circulation + reducing inflammation throughout the body
  • Restoring normal brain functioning via homeostatic effects

Acupuncture points are a meeting place of blood, nerve, lymph and an access point to the body’s messenger system of connective tissue.

It works via the fascia to send messages to stimulate the brain. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. For example, hormones such as dopamine and serotonin or endorphins and enkephalins. These biochemical changes stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.
