1. What was the moment, life event or inspiration behind starting your brand?
I wouldn't say there was a specific moment that inspired the company, but a collection of so many different learnings over the first six years of my career that made me realize we needed a bolder and better period care brand. I worked in the advocacy space for several years, and then wrote a book about the topic, and the more I studied the issue of stigma around menstruation, and learned the ins and outs of the industry, the more I realized that I needed to start something like August.
2. How has your AAPI heritage and culture shaped and informed your brand?
I'm half Japanese and half Taiwanese, and I wouldn't say that my heritage has necessarily shaped my brand — but I think I was always hyper aware of the stereotypes around Asian women, and that always energize me to be the opposite of quiet and submissive. The older I've gotten, the more appreciative I've felt for the Asian American community as well, and I think fostering community has a central goal of mine as we build this brand.
3. Is there a specific TCM ingredient (or practice) that you use in your products that you are most excited about right now, and why?
Not in our products, but I have been getting weekly acupuncture, and it has made such a difference in my IBS experience. I've struggled with chronic constipation, my whole life, and since doing weekly acupuncture and also adding more cardio into my routine, I found a lot more regular movement lol
4. As an AAPI woman, what is one piece of advice you wish you knew way earlier surrounding menstruation and menstrual health?
That menstruation is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a powerful thing that can bring us together!
